Digable Planets

The Digable Planets are an Alt Hip Hop Group that gained exposure in the early 90s, I was barely exposed to them last year. Although minute traces of their music can be heard in current hip hop songs such as 'Candy' by Snoop Dogg and 'Yay Area' by E-40, these samples do not do them any justice. For the Digable Planets have had a larger impact on hip hop other than being "to rap what key be to lock x 1,000,000" or "drippin' like water x 1,000,000". These brilliant lines come from brilliant songs that give us a genuine glimpse into the stark truths of reality in America's streets. They fluently speak the language of noncomformity and in a world where people are so quick to judge, they are a fresh sound for those with eyes and ears of multiple perspectives.

Digable Planets... So dope that they're gay.

Milk

The Health Benefits of Milk:

Congratulations to Dustin Lance Black for winning the 2009 Oscar for Best Original Screen Play and Sean Penn for winning the 2009 Oscar for Best Actor for the film 'Milk'. Any recognition of this great film deserves to be blogged about, but it doesn't hurt that the recognition is an Oscar. Hopefully the winning of these awards brings light to such an eye opening film. For every person who has felt excluded from society, for every person who was bullied for being different, for every person who fought against injustice, for every person... this film serves as an inspiration and hope for a better tomorrow. My wish is that the Oscar wins will bring awareness to the story of Harvey Milk and what he fought for. I hope it continues to spread its message of tolerance and peace throughout a society where conformity and theocracy seems to be commonplace.

So dope that it's gay, Harvey Milk and the film 'Milk'. Watch it, it does your body [mind and soul] good.

Sage Francis

Sage Francis-
Narcissist.

Why you need it in your life:
this song is a slap in the face to our unconscious consumer habits that are ingrained in everyday aspects of life, e.g. the media, societal pressures, and individual insecurities. One cannot help but feel empathetic to the truths Sage speaks, which is why he is so dope. Come on, at one point I had 20 pairs of Nike Shoes. I've always wondered WHY I felt the need to buy them all, and Sage couldn't have given me a better answer. Consumerism isn't all too bad when coupled with a sense of responsibility, self-confidence, and awareness.

Remember the name, Sage Francis.

Poupées

Street Art:

Miss Van brings a feminine touch to the world of Street Art. There is a sense of realism seen in the figures of these characters that Miss Van calls "poupées." Miss Van's portrayal of full figured women in their purest forms is a far leap away from conventional unattainable images of what a woman should look like. For this reason, and the fact that her art can stick it out on strictly male dominated canvas walls, Miss Van and her poupées are certified 'so dope that they're gay'.

Do you agree? Nay or Gay?

Inspiration

I think that should be said as a compliment. Like, 'Dude, that's so good it's almost . . . gay.'"
